Chief Resident - Internal Medicine - 90 Miles to Chicago and Milwaukee


The Mercyhealth Internal Medicine Academic Chief Resident position is a one year position from July 1 until June 30.   It carries the PGY 4 Chief Resident designation but also has an Attending faculty appointment in the Mercyhealth outpatient clinics.  Inherent in this position is some flexibility to meet the individual goals and needs of the person in the position as well as the needs of the IM Residency Program.  Hours: 7:00AM to 5:00PM Monday through Friday on-site but carry pager and available 24/7.


The Chief Resident must:

  • Serve as a Liaison between residents and faculty and monitor the well-being of residents including but not limited to fatigue mitigation, mental and physical health.
  • Confirm, refute, or provide additional feedback on individual resident performance during faculty reviews of resident progress. Attend Clinical Competency Committee and serve as an active member
  • Assist in trouble shooting issues regarding individual resident performance. Serves as a resident mentor.
  • Coordinate resident rotation schedules. Make changes during the academic year as indicated with the goal of making sure that all ACGME requirements are met.
  • Coordinate resident didactic schedule. Attend all resident didactics (including but not limited to Noon Conference and the weekly Academic Half Day). Contact attendings one week before each session to verify the attending presenter will be present for each and every didactic session as scheduled.   Make sure PowerPoints are preloaded and the technology in the conference room is fully functional for each session. Track resident attendance at didactics and record in New Innovations. Develop and present at regularly scheduled sessions including Board Review questions for residents (e.g., MKSAP and Medstudy) – serve as faculty member for resident case presentations.
  • Coordinate resident “jeopardy” scheduling (=develop & oversee a backup schedule for residents who are ill or otherwise not available for scheduled duties)
  • Maintain regular availability via scheduled office hours.
  • Assist in the annual updating of the resident manual.
  • Meet with the IM Residency Program Director on a regularly scheduled basis and PRN as issues occur.
  • Coordinate Resident participation in the ACGME required Annual Program Review.
  • Attend Resident Simulation Sessions and work with Simulation Center Medical Director to optimize these sessions.
  • Attend the twice a month Teaching Committee meeting and other meetings as designated by the IM Residency Program Director.
  • Coordinate resident assignment and participation in Hospital Committees as required by the ACGME
  • Conduct elections for resident class representatives, representatives for the institutional residency advisory council, as well as other situations that require resident participation.
  • Assist Class Representatives in preparing agenda for IM Residency Resident Advisory Committee sessions that are held quarterly.
  • Track and make sure that residents have held required meetings with their Faculty Advisor.
  • Track resident duty hours and report to the Program Director. Make sure residents are recording duty hours at least once a week and that recording is accurate.  Bring any repeat violations to the attention of the Program Director to prevent ACGME sanctions.
  • Achieve 100% resident participation in both the annual INTERNAL resident Program Improvement survey (held Nov/Dec each year) as well as the Annual ACGME mandatory resident survey (held in March each year)
  • Assist residents in developing EPIC templates for clinical care.
  • Attend resident inpatient rounds daily and mentor residents who are in need of assistance with time management. Make sure that residents are trained in succinct presentation skills to facilitate Teaching team rounds and efficient cost effective clinical care of patients.
  • Assist Program Leadership in scheduling in training exam so that patient care coverage disruption is kept to a minimum
  • Review Continuity Clinic Metrics with each resident on a quarterly basis and develop improvement plans.
  • Assist each resident in selecting the required Quality Project and then mentor each resident so that the project is completed and prepared for presentation to the entire resident group at a didactic session
  • Assist residents in presenting their research at the American College of Physicians annual regional “resident day”.
  • Coordinate Resident presentation that the Monthly Journal Club
  • Coordinate Resident presentation at the monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference.
  • Oversee incident reporting in a manner that is compatible with the ACGME required CLER criteria (Clinical Learning Environment Review).
  • Assist in resident recruiting and interviews which includes serving as a candidate interviewer, coordinating resident attendance at recruiting interview sessions, and conducting tours for each group of applicants for IM residency positions.
  • Serve as a role model and guide for other residents in their professional interactions with patients, families, staff and colleagues.
  • Ensure that transitions of care are done effectively and comply with standards set by the Residency Program. Oversee the 7AM “transition of care” Monday through Friday and complete the “Hand-off CEX” as directed by the Program Director.
  • Mentor residents who are placed on remediation or probation by the Clinical Competency Committee and the Program Director.
  • Coordinate IM Resident “team building” activities.
  • Perform resident “chart reviews” as indicated and complete required competency evaluations.
  • Oversee resident portfolio preparation and self-evaluation for the ACGME required Semi-Annual evaluation sessions.
  • Oversee resident procedure performance so that each resident achieves documented competency in all medical procedures required by the ACGME and ABIM
  • Maintain ACLS certification for the duration of the Chief Resident year.
  • Oversee Resident leadership of Code Blue and RRT for residents who are in the PGY 2 or PGY 3 year.
  • Mediate disagreements between residents and nursing/ ancillary staff and report these episodes promptly to the Program Director.
  • Apply for faculty status in the University of Illinois College of Medicine (Rockford)
  • Make sure that resident medical records are complete and up to date and comply with standards set by Mercyhealth HIM
  • Make sure that residents follow up on Continuity Clinic patient test results, patient calls, and Pharmacy request for refills within the time frame mandated by Mercyhealth.
  • Precept in the Outpatient Resident continuity clinic as well as serve as an Attending Physician in the Mercyhealth outpatient clinic setting for three half days per week and serve as a “fill in Preceptor” when a scheduled preceptor is not able to attend a scheduled session.
  • Assist in the educational experience for   Medical Students at Mercyhealth
  • Complete one or more projects, tailored to the interests and goals of the individual as well as the needs of the IM Residency Program.
  • Coordinate resident participation in scholarly activities as required by the ACGME


  • Graduation (anticipated) from an accredited U.S. Internal Medicine Residency, in good academic standing. 
  • Must be eligible for the Internal Medicine Board Exam.
  • Letters of support from faculty in her/his residency program
  • Core skills: Leadership, conflict management, organization, teaching


  • Must carry Illinois Medical License


  • Passing the or IL Health Care Workers Background Check.
  • Must be able to follow written/oral instructions.
