Director of Behavioral Medicine at Northern Light EMMC Family Medicine Residency Program

Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center seeks a Director of Behavioral Medicine to join its dynamic team at the Family Medicine Residency Program. This is a unique and exciting opportunity that incorporates leadership, teaching, and clinical practice!

The Director of Behavioral Medicine will be responsible for all aspects of the development, implementation, coordination, management, and evaluation of the integrated behavioral medicine services at the Family Medicine Residency Clinic.

This position has three main clinical, administrative, and faculty roles within our integrated clinic.

Clinical Role:

  • Provision of trauma-informed behavioral health therapy/counseling services to a diverse and vulnerable patient population.
  • Offer collaborative and consultative behavioral health services to patients, Family Medicine Residents, and Faculty Physicians.
  • Provide clinical support, supervision, ongoing professional development, guidance, and evaluation to behavioral health clinicians and students.

Administrative Role:

  • Managing and supervising behavioral medicine team
  • Propose and monitor budget for the Behavioral Medicine team.

Faculty Role:

  • Advise and assist the Family Medicine Residency Program Director in matters related to:
    • the development and implementation of a longitudinal integrated behavioral medicine curriculum to ensure compliance with all ACGME behavioral medicine requirements for Resident Physicians.
    • addressing realms of clinical behavioral medicine, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, scholarship, social justice, health equity and wellness.
  • Participate in various committees which might include the following topics:
    • Wellness activities for Residents, Faculty, Staff
    • Program evaluation
    • Resident support
  • Participate in the Residency recruitment process and the orientation of new residents
  • Develop and present behavioral medicine topics for didactic and Faculty Development sessions
  • Engage in scholarly activity, quality improvement, teach fundamentals of stress management, community development partnerships
  • Provide resources and appropriate referrals for Residents and Faculty who require mental health evaluation and behavioral health care.


  • Doctoral degree in Psychology, Social Work or other behavioral science related to health education; or Masters in Social Work with concentration in counseling required.
  • Previous faculty development, research, and management experience preferred.
  • American Balint Society certification desired.
  • An active Maine licensure (or ability to be licensed in the state of Maine) at the independent/non-conditional level is required.

Program Description:

NL EMMC's Family Medicine Residency program offers a "best of all worlds" place to teach and learn Family Medicine. Our clinical environment is a tertiary care, big-city size and quality hospital and we are an unopposed, rural medicine training program surrounded by the beauty and outdoor opportunities of Maine. We care for a vulnerable population at the Family Medicine Residency. Our integrated behavioral approach is rooted in trauma informed care and utilizes and educates our Residents in cognitive behavioral therapy and motivational interviewing. Unique opportunities for group visits such as our Medication Assisted Treatment group exist within our clinic and incorporate physicians and behavioral health providers working collaboratively.
